U.S. Postal Eames Stamps

image
With all due respect to the Liberty Bell "Forever" stamp (that will always cover the cost of mailing a first-class letter under one ounce despite any future rate increases), the Bell has nothing on the Eames stamps. More Eames stamps after the click...

Charles and Ray Eames revolutionized toys, architecture, furniture and gadgets. Some of their most iconic designs (still in use today) are being honored by the U.S. Post Office in stamp format --- a whole sheet block of them, 16 in all.

The stamps are well done, and capture the colorful and bold, simple cheer of the Eames style. There's the famous scoop chair with its rod or "Eiffel Tower" base (seen everywhere, from cafeterias to classrooms), the leather and molded wood Eames lounge chair and ottoman (1956, a modernist status symbol for real people as well as fictional ones, like Dr. Frasier Crane), La Chaise (1948, which looks rather like airy, molded crepe batter being swept along by a strong wind), the Eames molded plywood chair, and the Eames wire chair.

There's also a stamp of the Eames house...

...and a stamp of some Eames toys...

And that doesn't exhaust the list. See them all at the U.S. Post Office Web site.
