Monday Morning Mad Men Blogging: The Jet Set

Seriously, aren't the writers getting bored with Don? I am. It's all the random sex. It's becoming formulaic and lazy. I think the show gets lazy with the sexism as well, veering from historical representation and illumination to just wallowing in it because the writers and producers can get away with it. And no one really questions it, I think, because the art direction on the show is so damn good. Contrast Mad Men with Deadwood, for example, on how to get crass but still remain true to the context and not to appear to exploit it.
More on the jump and a sneak peek video at next week's Mad Men ep, "The Mountain King"...
So in this ep we learn Jane writes bad poetry and that Roger has a taste for Jane, but no taste for poetry. With all the relentless and often cavalier adultery on the show I thought I'd do a shout out to survivinginfidelity.com. Whether you're a wandering partner or a betrayed one, this is a place that can help. For the wanderers, there are forums dedicated just to those in that situation, to get non-judgmental support from those who have been there. And for those who have been betrayed, the same. There are great FAQs and recommended reading, and the forums are very well-moderated. Attacks are not tolerated. Good luck, to both the wanderers and the betrayed. Hope that site helps.
Well, back to frivolity.
I confess I got a little thrill when Kurt set off a bomb in the break room by so very nonchalantly announcing that he was a "homosexyoual." From the reaction of his coworkers, you might have thought he said he was going to "keel moose and sqvirrel." I think Kurt may be German or something similar, but his nondescript European accent was a nice standardbearer for the unfamiliar and the strange and the threatening. Sort of like those Armageddon-heralding Soviet missles Don and Pete were contemplating, which had Russian accents. My heart went out a little to Sal, who is as far away from that comfortable declaration of his sexuality as Irkutsk is from Albany. One minor complaint with the gay storyline in this ep -- Kurt does a makeover on Peggy and she winds up looking even more repressed than before. Maybe that was meant to break the stereotype that all gays have fashion sense? Dunno. But I guess we know now that Peggy's a Jackie.
As promised, a sneak peek at next week's Mad Men ep, "The Mountain King"...
