Haunted Memories Halloween Portraits

By now, many devoted Halloweeners have heard of the work of Eddie Allen. He mixes lenticular photography with antique photographs to create delightfully eerie and enthusiastically gory portraits of "normal people" that change as the viewer moves. A little Victorian girl sits on an oversized seat, her masses of thick, gently curling locks cascading down her shoulders like ribbon candy. Take a few steps to the right and watch as her entire face becomes hirsute. Her lips draw back in a snarl. Her eyes bulge and protrude. Little Hannah is now a bonifide were-child.

It's a process that takes many steps, and although the process is do-able by most, the investment in the special equipment is probably not attractive for most. Whether or not he was the first to pioneer "spooky portraiture," Allen now has many rivals. But his, as far as I've seen, are still the best, perhaps because he takes great care to make the transitions from one state to another smooth, and he's more likely to go for photographic realism than cartoonish crudity. Allen smartly provides not only "before and after" pics, but video of the actual transitions. You can see that the gradual, smooth changes is where your money is going. It's a superior product.

Prices may seem steep, but for the amount of work that Allen has put into each initial portrait, from the photographic effects to the lenticular photography process, the prices are not unseemly (though they're not cheap). Various sizes make them more affordable. There's always a rush for his work around Halloween, so if you have your heart set on Cousin Drucilla or Aunt Astrid or Uncle Charles (my personal favorites), best to order now. He sells via his Web site and through eBay.

Oh, and this year, some new faces have been added to the family album. Welcome cat lady Cousin Claudia, toolmaster cousin Harry, the easily shocked Uncle Roderick, and the young woman who has a problem with grudges, Aunt Lizzy. There's also a fetching trio called Midwestern Matricide (probably self-explanatory).
