I have a thing for abcdariums. The wonderfulness of the words. The graphical quality of the letters. The curious quality of the defined. And, of course, I like to eat and drink on a regular basis.

These captivating glasses and plates wow me. They satisfy my literary and artistic bent, my love of zoology, and add a dash of good, ol' vintage flair. What I especially like about them is that the animals are oddballs. They certainly exist, but are not generally well-known. How delightful it was to see my old friend, the barbaroussa (first encountered during my childhood leafings through the dictionary). How satisfying it was to see my old friend, the gennet, finally get her due. And it was a geographic bonus to see a reference to the Wallachian sheep, for we rarely encounter a reference to Wallachia outside Vlad the Impaler travel guides.

Yes, it's true, these glasses and plates are a little pricey if one contemplates getting the whole set, and alas our alphabet has 26 letters, which means a full set of plates costs $285 and a full set of glasses costs $195. But if the outlay of all that lucre is a bit intimidating, you can purchase any of them individually. Each plate is $14 and each glass is $9. (See all letter illustrations -- PDF document)

Going piecemeal (pun lightly intended) is a perfect way to go, actually. In my diningroom I envision a table set with a glass and a plate (they're 7.5" in diameter, so that would make them dessert/luncheon-sized, btw), with the initial of every guest in attendance. With my friends and family that means I might have to get doubles of some of the letters. The charm effect would certainly be worth it.
