Andrea Doria Diver Dies at Wreck

Veteran sunken wreck diver David Bright died after going into cadiac arrest Saturday, July 8, after surfacing from a dive to the Andrea Doria. Bright, 49, returned to the surface from a 225-foot dive to the wreck, which lies 50 miles southeast of Nantucket at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. A 120-dive Andrea Doria veteran, Bright has also expored other famous wrecks, like the Empress of Ireland and the Titanic. The Empress of Ireland suffered a similar fate as the Andrea Doria, sinking in the icy waters of Canada's St. Lawrence River after colliding with the Norwegian coal ship Storstad in foggy weather. Bright returned to the Empress of Ireland in early July for a series of dives that had to be cut short because of bad weather and conditions.

Bright's most recent Doria dive was in preparation for the 50th anniversary of the ocean liner's sinking later this month at the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point New York. Bright founded the reunion event, which had run for many years. Bright is survived by three children.
