Sophia Kokosalaki to Head Vionnet

33-year-old Sophia Kokosalaki will head up the design house of Vionnet, a venerable institution in the fashion world. Founded by couturier Madeleine Vionnet, whose styles were marked by draping and almost mathematical structure, the fashion house was leader in the world of haute couture in the 1920s and 1930s. After closing on the eve of World War II, the house of Vionnet has made a resurgance of late, after its reopening in 1995. Kokosalaki's first collection for Vionnet will be a spring/summer offering for 2007. Customers interested in Vionnet can purchase pieces from the Vionnet store in Paris. In the United States the collection will be sold through exclusively via Barneys New York at the fashion chain's New York City, Beverly Hills, Dallas, Boston and Chicago locations.

Greek designer Kokosalaki graduated from London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Her accomplishments include the Elle Designer award, the Art Foundation Award for Fashion (2002) and the New Generation Designer award (2004). Stylistically, Kokosalaki is known for her draping, which was also a hallmark of Madeleine Vionnet, the house's founder.
