The Salzburg Festival, headed by German composer Peter Ruzicka, kicks off festivities on Monday and will run through August. The inaugural opera of the festival will be Mozart's little-presented work, "Il Re Pastore," which has never before been staged in Salzburg. The performances will not be confined to a single venue, but will be shown in many locations throughout the city, and some of the works will be performed multiple times. In addition to Mozart's operatic works, non-operatic works will also be shown.
