Mary Quant Given Honorary Degree

Designing icon Mary Quant was given an honorary doctorate of letters from Scottish intitution Heriot-Watt University in recognition of her contribution to fashion. Quant's design stamp includes the mini-skirt and hotpants (other designers have also been awarded this credit, among them Andre Courrèges). Quant named her new skirt after her epoynmous favorite car. She is also credited with the use of colored tights in accord with the miniskirt (although it has also been posited that the credit belongs to Christobal Balenciaga). She has worked in the field since her school days, but her major time of influence has been in the 1960s and 1970s.
