Maltese Falcon Flies the Coop
A signed reproduction of the Maltese Falcon, used for publicity stills for the film, was stolen from a San Francisco restaurant.
Signed by San Fransisco actor Elisha Cook, Jr., who played Wilmer the Gunsel in the film, it had been given to John's Grill after the restaurant's owner, John Konstin and San Francisco private investigator Jack Immendorf failed in their attempt to acquire the falcon used in the film.
The Falcon was stored in a locked cabinet. It was discovered missing Saturday afternoon, and it was surmised that the theft took place late Friday night or early Saturday morning. Other valuable items were also taken, including old and signed books by and about author Dashiell Hammett, who wrote The Maltese Falcon.
Konstin has offered a $25,000 reward for the return of the stolen items.
If Sam Spade can be put on the case, perhaps The Maltese Falcon could have a sequel.
