Breakfast at Tiffany’s Dress to Be Auctioned
The long, black, columnar Givenchy gown that transformed Audrey Hepburn into the iconic Holly Golightly in the film Breakfast at Tiffany'swill go on the auction block at Christie's South Kensington. The gown will be offered with other entertainment-related lots at the auction house's annual film and entertainment sale on December 5th. Based on Truman capote's eponymous novel about a charming, flighty and troubled young woman who tries to forget her backwoods roots and integrate into New York City's fashionable life, the film helped cement Hepburn's Hollywood royalty status, and the image of her in the gown, with its memorable, half-circle neckline, pearls and long-stemmed cigarette holder was used on the film's advertising posters. Hepburn, in the gown, embodies the title of the film and the novel, as she steps out of a cab in the morning with her brown paper bag breakfast, and peers into the windows of the famous 5th Avenue jewellers, Tiffany & Company. The gown's auction estimate is 70,000 pounds (approximately $130,000) and proceeds will benefit the City of Joy Aid, a charity that works to bring relief to children in India. The gown was given by designer Givenchy to the charity's founders.
